MP says no parking permits for major new developmets in Lewes

Lewes MP Norman Baker has today called on the County Council to amend its parking scheme in Lewes so that occupants of the major new developments currently being built or planned for the town centre are deemed not to be eligible to apply for residents’ parking permits.

His move comes as many Lewes residents are becoming increasingly concerned that the parking problems in the town caused by the introduction of a controlled parking zone will be made worse by the number of large developments that are being planned for the town centre.

Speaking on the issue, Norman said "Lewes is a medieval town and residents already have great difficulty in finding on-street parking spaces. If all the residents of the new developments being built or planned secured parking permits, the situation would be intolerable. People are now being asked to pay close to £100 for a permit, and for that there should be a reasonable expectation of finding a place to park.

"On the other hand, the new developments being built are designed to be car-free, so those moving in should do so in the full expectation that a permit may not be available.

"I am concerned that the County Council may find the lure of a wadge of new income irresistible and oversell permits, irrespective of the impact on Lewes."

Mr Baker has now formally written to Rupert Clubb, the new Director of Transport and Environment on the matter.
