Local MP comes runner up in House Magazine awards

Local Lib Dem MP, Norman Baker, has been announced as runner-up in the ‘Backbencher of the Year’ category at the 2007 House Magazine awards ceremony at Westminster. The award was won by David Taylor, the Labour MP.

Mr Baker had been nominated by fellow MPs for the award with the citation beside his name: ‘asks the important questions that no-one else will raise’. The nomination for the award is likely to have been in recognition of his persistent questioning and campaigning on numerous issues including, most recently, his successful campaigns to publish a breakdown of MPs’ travel allowances and to stop the Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill from passing into law.

Other awards that Norman has won include the Best Newcomer MP award in 1997, the Zurich/Spectator "Inquisitor of the Year" Award in 2001, the Channel 4 Opposition MP of the Year Award in 2002 and the RSPCA Lord Erskine Award, in recognition of his tireless campaigning in the field of animal welfare, in 2003.

Commenting on the nomination, Norman Baker said:

"I am delighted to be a runner-up for this prestigious award and would like to thank all of my colleagues across party lines who supported my nomination and voted for me.

"I was particularly pleased to be considered in this category because it highlights the impact that a backbench MP can have and acknowledges the importance to our system of government of those MPs who use their position to challenge the status quo and ask the difficult questions which can make a real difference. This award reminds people, both inside and outside Parliament, that active backbench MPs from all parties play a vital role in holding Ministers and the Government to account."
