MP slams Lewes parking scheme and calls for Bank Holiday parking to be free

Lewes MP Norman Baker has today slammed as heavy-handed and disproportionate the attitude that East Sussex County Council is taking towards parking in the town and called for the unpopular parking scheme to be changed to end the charges for parking on Bank Holidays.

Speaking on the issue, Norman said: “The County Council is losing friends hand over fist with the heavy-handed and mercenary way the Lewes parking scheme is now being enforced. People in Lewes will tolerate a parking scheme but not one that charges for Bank Holidays, tickets the cars of vicars who are giving services and hearses. It is a great pity that East Sussex County Council has taken this attitude towards Lewes. It is as if they are trying to squeeze every last penny that they can out of the town.

"The heavy handed approach of the Council towards parking in the town has already had a negative impact on both local businesses and local people. Hardly a week goes by when I do not receive a number of letters from people who feel that they have been treated badly by the parking system. Indeed, I regularly receive letters from people outside of my constituency who say that they will no longer visit Lewes because the parking situation is so unreasonable. Moreover, the number of complaints I am receiving seems to be increasing in number.

"I am calling for the County Council to review the enforcement of this scheme and to introduce a more sensible light-touch approach that local people can support. As a start, they should immediately abolish charges for Bank Holiday parking."
