Local MP Norman Baker has today criticised the Environment Agency over the amount of money that it has spent on hotel bills and hospitality over the past three years.
Following a letter from Norman requesting that they release information to him relating to their hospitality spending, the MP was shocked to learn that nearly eight million pounds was spent on hotel bills and over one million pounds on hospitality between 2004 and 2007, even though the Agency is claiming that for funding reasons Lewes will have to wait longer for adequate flood defences and the Cuckmere estuary will need to be left to fall victim to the sea.
Speaking on the issue Norman said "To spend close to eight million pounds on hotel bills in just three years, along with over a million pounds on hospitality, looks profligate in the extreme. As an unelected body, the Environment Agency needs to be much more careful over how it spends public money.
"The Agency continually complains that it does not have enough money to provide long overdue flood defences in towns like Lewes. A little less spent on gin and tonic, and a little more on bricks and mortar might help."
