Local MP concerned over rise in pupil-teacher ratio in county primary schools

Local MP Norman Baker has today expressed his concern at the news that Conservative-controlled East Sussex County Council is amongst 40 local authorities in which the ratio of qualified teaching staff to pupils has fallen at primary school level.

The pupil-teacher ratio has risen across primary schools in East Sussex from 21.7 pupils per teacher in 2006 to 21.9 in 2007.

Commenting on the news, Norman said “It is unfortunate that the ratio of qualified teachers to pupils has fallen in East Sussex, even if only by 0.2. There’s no doubt that smaller class sizes allow more individual attention to be given to children, which helps their education.

“I hope that these figures are a temporary blip and that the Council will now take steps to reverse this increase for next year.”
