Newhaven incinerator complaint filed with European Commissioner

Norman Baker MP has today filed an official complaint with the European Commissioner Charlie McCreevy, asking him to intervene to overturn the decision taken in secret by East Sussex County Council to extend the waste management contract with Veolia by five years to deal with the fast-escalating cost of the hated Newhaven incinerator.

He has been joined in his call by local Lib Dem MEP Sharon Bowles. The two argue that the decision taken by ESCC is illegal under the EU Procurement Regulations and may also infringe the legal requirements relating to state aid.

The extension of the contract, which the local MP and MEP believe should be subject in law to advertisement and open competition, is only known about at all thanks to the leaking of relevant papers to Norman Baker.

Norman says: "The Tory county council is so desperate to see its incinerator built that they are content to pay ever-rocketing costs and now, it seems, to break the law as well. In the interests of the local taxpayer, not to mention the environment, a brake needs to be applied to this crazy policy."
