Local MP Norman Baker has today welcomed the commitment from the Environment Agency to try to resolve the problem that led to flooding in Ringmer earlier this year in July, after he brought it to their attention.
On 20 July almost 70mm of rain fell on Ringmer during the morning rush hour resulting in flooding in a number of properties, most noticeably in the Broyle and Norlington Lane areas of the village.
It was originally thought that the flooding was caused by the Norlington Stream overflowing, but on closer inspection by the Environment Agency and East Sussex County Council Highways, it has been determined that the flooding was as a result of the surface water drainage system not being able to cope with the large volume of rainwater.
In a letter to Norman, Harvey Bradshaw, the Kent and East Sussex Area Manager for the Environment Agency has said that the Environment Agency is now working with East Sussex County Council Highways to prepare a plan to ‘jointly resolve’ the problem.
Speaking on the news Norman said: “I am pleased to see that the Environment Agency and the County Council are taking the issue of flooding in Ringmer seriously.
“With climate change meaning that flooding events are becoming more common, it is important that more attention is given to efforts to minimise the risk for householders.”
