Local MP angered at clearance of Hawth Valley land

Seaford’s MP Norman Baker has voiced strong concerns about possible moves to develop land off Surrey Road, Hawth Valley, where the owners have been gradually clearing parts of the site of undergrowth and shrubbery, as well as collecting certain resident species and moving them to other parts of the site. This wild area has previously been the subject of planning applications that have been refused by Lewes District Council.

In recent weeks, Norman’s Lewes constituency office has received dozens of letters from residents of the area, concerned about the loss of habitat in the area known locally as ‘the dip’.

Norman said: "The view of Lewes District Council is that since there is no building work taking place this is not currently a matter for the Council. Nevertheless in my view the owner of the site is clearly attempting to move the goalposts, or in this case, wildlife, in order to advance his cause.

"I am fully supportive of any efforts to preserve the site, which is an important natural asset in this part of Seaford. The site should have been left unspoilt and it is disappointing to see that clearance works have been carried out. I can understand the reaction of locals to this."
