Newhaven MP submits objection to incinerator compulsory purchase order
Local MP Norman Baker has today submitted a written letter of objection to the public inquiry into the Compulsory Purchase Order for the acquisition of land at North Quay, Newhaven by East Sussex County Council who want to force the owner of the land to sell so that the Conservative council can proceed with the building of its hugely unpopular incinerator.
In his letter, the MP raises several points to the inspector, including:
- The strong possibility that East Sussex and Brighton & Hove councils are in breach of EU procurement regulations.
- The suggestion that the financial competence of the two councils needs to be questioned.
- The existence of viable alternative waste management techniques to incineration.
- The location of the proposed incinerator site, as well as the effects of the transportation of large amounts of waste by road.
- The impact that the proposed incinerator would have on recycling rates in the county.
- The strong level of local opposition to the scheme.
Speaking on the issue, Norman said: “I welcome this public inquiry into the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the incinerator land, as it gives all of us who have campaigned vigorously over the years against this scheme a final chance to make our views heard.
“I am determined to stop this Tory incinerator, and encourage other like minded people to submit letters of objection to the inquiry.”
