MP reveals fifth of local police officers resign within two years

Local Lib Dem MP Norman Baker has today revealed that nearly a fifth of new recruits to Sussex Police resign within two years, making it the 4th worst police force in the country at retaining new recruits.

This revelation follows findings by the Lib Dems which reveal that in some regions, as many as a quarter of new officers leave within two years. The worst affected force is Surrey where 27% leave after two years with the best performing being the City of London who retain 97% of new recruits within the same period.

Commenting on the figures, Norman said:

"These figures for Sussex Police and indeed many other forces are extremely worrying. The level of early dropout rates clearly raises issues which needs to be addressed if we are to ensure that we have experienced officers in the future.

"There are massive variations between forces which should concern the Home Secretary. Where retention is particularly problematic, such as here in Sussex, there is a real risk that the public may receive a diminished service, so the Government needs to look closely at the source of this problem and take concrete steps to rectify it."
