Lewes MP Norman Baker has today expressed his shock at the amount of money that Conservative controlled East Sussex County Council has spent on legal costs for the proposed incinerator at Newhaven.
The MP requested the information on how much the council had spent on legal fees relating to the proposed incinerator each year since 1999. In their response, the county council said that the total cost of the legal advice from their solicitors had been £1,902,876.02. However, this figure was shared between East Sussex and Brighton and Hove councils on the basis of two-thirds and one-third respectively.
This comes after the MP revealed back in late September that the cost of the Incinerator has already doubled since it was first approved.
Speaking about the news, Norman said: “I find it ridiculous that East Sussex and Brighton and Hove Councils have been able to spend nearly two million pounds worth of taxpayers’ money on legal advice for an incinerator nobody wants.
"The costs of the proposed incinerator in Newhaven has already been shown to be spiralling out of control, and today’s news does not help the situation.
"It was my understanding that the incinerator was supposed to burn waste. To me it looks like the only thing it is good at burning is taxpayers’ money."
