Local MP Norman Baker has today welcomed the decision by EDF to remove three sections of overhead power lines from the Sussex Downs and install underground cables in their place. The sections in question are:
The removal of the overhead power lines has been made possible due to an allowance granted by Ofgem, the industry regulator, which allowed EDF to work closely with the South Downs Joint Committee to improve the landscape in the area.
Speaking on the news, Norman said: "I am extremely pleased to see that EDF have taken this welcome step and will be removing these unsightly overhead cables from the South Downs.
"The timing of this is especially pertinent, with the final decision on the boundaries of the South Downs National Park being made in the near future.
"Although this is very positive news, I will continue to press the case for the removal of the overhead cables at Southerham, and indeed have written to EDF regarding this matter."
