Local MP, Norman Baker, has today been appointed Lib Dem Shadow Transport Secretary by new party Leader, Nick Clegg.

Mr Baker, who has previously been the Cabinet Office Spokesman and Environment Spokesman for the party will take up his new role with immediate effect.

Nick Clegg was elected as the Liberal Democrat's new leader on Tuesday, following a 2 month leadership contest against Chris Huhne.

Commenting, Norman said:

"I am delighted to have been appointed Lib Dem Transport Spokesman and to be able to play a key role in the new shadow cabinet.

"I have a longstanding interest in transport issues and had indicated my enthusiasm for this brief to Nick Clegg over the past few days which is why I am particularly pleased following today's announcement.

"Locally, this role will also allow me a direct line to the Minister to raise transport issues that directly affect my constituents, such as the reinstatement of the Lewes-Uckfield line and the urgent need for improvements to other local public transport services."
