Local Lib Dem MP Norman Baker has tabled a parliamentary motion calling on the Prime Minister to meet the Dalai Lama when he visits the UK in May this year.
Mr Baker, who is President of the Tibet Society and Vice-Chair of the All Party Group for Tibet, has used the motion to highlight the worsening human rights in Tibet and the Dalai Lama’s commitment to a non-violent solution to the Tibetan people’s campaign for autonomy from China.
The motion also emphasises the significant number of other national leaders who have recently met with the Dalai Lama, including President George Bush and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany.
Commenting on the motion, Norman Baker said:
"I am glad to have been able to table this motion calling on Gordon Brown to meet the Dalai Lama and particularly pleased that the motion has already gained the cross-party support of 60 MPs.
"The human rights situation in Tibet is growing steadily worse and the Chinese Government appear to be using the rounds of dialogue as a stalling device rather than a real opportunity to find a non-violent solution to the situation. Time is running out for a just resolution of the Tibetan issue. This is why I have tabled this motion and it is an issue of the utmost importance that the Prime Minister meets the Dalai Lama when he visits the UK in May."
