Lewes MP Norman Baker has today welcomed the news that the Tesco store in Lewes is amongst the top 10 stores in the country when it comes to the reduction in the use of plastic carrier bags.
Over the last 18 months, the store has reduced it usage of carrier bags by 27%, which equates to a saving of 2.6 million bags.
Tesco was the first retailer to set a carrier bag reduction target, and since 2006 has been able to save over 1 billion bags.
Norman visited the store last Friday (7th March), in order to discuss Tesco’s environmental policies, both local and national, as well as to congratulate the store’s manager, Basil Mitchell, on the reduction in carrier bag use achieved by the store.
Speaking on the subject, Norman said: "I am pleased to see that the Tesco store in Lewes is amongst the best in the country when it comes to reducing plastic carrier bag use.
"I would also like to congratulate all of those customers who have helped to reduce the store’s usage of carrier bags. The fact that the Lewes store has performed so well in this regards is a tribute to the environmental commitment shown by Lewes residents, and I would encourage others to buy reusable bags as an alternative to plastic carriers."
"I still think, though, that we have to go further. My report, "How Green Is Your Supermarket?", revealed that supermarkets in the UK use an incredible 17 billion plastic bags a year. There is clearly a case for a tax on bags, or better still, a deposit scheme which returns the problem to the store handing out the bags."
