Local MP Norman Baker has today expressed his deep concern after hearing the news that the HM Revenue and Customs office in Lewes is amongst a group of three HMRC offices in Sussex that have been recommended for closure.
There has been a cloud hanging over the future of the Lewes HMRC office for a few months now, and it has been confirmed today that it is being proposed to be closed as part of a national re-structuring programme at the HMRC.
A total of 53 staff work in the Lewes office, and the loss of the office could result in the public having to contact the HMRC over the phone or the internet rather than receiving face to face service.
The proposal marks the beginning of an 8 week long consultation period which will run up to 14 May, with outcome of the process will be made known in the summer.
Speaking on the news Norman said: “This is a very serious and concerning piece of news. Not just for the HMRC staff in Lewes, but also for those in the town and environs who use its services on a regular basis.
"I will be contacting the relevant Treasury Minister in order to arrange a meeting to express my concerns about the situation, and why I think that the Lewes office should remain open.
"First we had a massive round of post office closures, and now we have this. The Government is clearly failing to appreciate the value of local services."
