Newick's MP has today backed his Newick constituents and lodged a formal objection to plans to allow the local doctors' surgery to dispense prescriptions. The proposal has also been strongly opposed by both Newick and Chailey Parish Councils.
At present, there is a Lloyds Pharmacy in Newick, which not only attracts people in to the village, thus supporting other local businesses, but also provides a delivery service to elderly and disabled people over a wide geographical area who would otherwise find it difficult to get their medication.
There are fears that if the application were to be approved, then the Newick pharmacy would lose business, and as a result, may well become unviable and have to close down. If it did, there are real fears in the village that this would have a domino effect on the village's other businesses.
Speaking on the issue, Norman said: "This is a most important matter for Newick, which helps explain why an incredible 1700 local people have already made clear their opposition. The Appeal Committee must listen to these objections and block the application from the doctors' surgery.
"The pharmacy in Newick plays a crucial role in the local community, and I am glad to see that the present threat to it is being vigorously opposed by the local community."
The Lib Dem MP has asked the Appeal Committee to hold an oral hearing into the application in either Newick or Lewes, and has asked if he can speak at it.
