Lewes MP to meet minister over proposed closure of tax office in Lewes

The battle to prevent closure of the local tax office in Lewes steps up a gear this week when Lewes MP Norman Baker meets Jane Kennedy MP, the Minister responsible for HM Revenue and Customs on Wednesday. He will make clear his opposition to the proposed closure of the HMRC office at Medwyn House, Lewes.

The closure of the office was proposed in March as part of a restructuring effort by HMRC, which also involves the closure of offices in Hove and Worthing.

The proposals have caused much concern recently, as it would mean that people and businesses that at present use the HMRC office in Lewes would have to go to Brighton instead.

Speaking on the issue, Norman said: "I have been contacted by concerned HMRC employees in Lewes, who, apart from being concerned about their future ability to get to work, are also concerned about the impact that the closure could have on local individuals and businesses.

"It is inconsistent that in this age of increasing fuel prices and concern over climate change that the government is considering closing down HMRC offices, forcing employees and users of their services alike to travel as far as Brighton in order to work and access services. It is also unacceptable that the large employment base here in the county town should be told it does not need an office. Given the difficulty in explaining complex matters by phone or email, a local office is exactly what we do need."
