Analysis by the Lib Dems has today revealed that almost two thirds of hospital trusts around the country, including Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals and East Sussex Hospitals have failed to meet their target to halve the number of MRSA cases.
The figures also reveal that Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals is one of only two hospitals in the country with a rate of MRSA more than double the national average.

Commenting, local MP Norman Baker said:
"While it is welcome that our local hospitals have achieved improvements in tackling infection rates over the last few years it is disappointing that they have failed to meet the target to halve the number of MRSA cases. It is particularly disappointing that, in the case of Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals, the infection rate remains so high.
"Now the deadline for its own MRSA target has passed, the Government might think the pressure is off, but it is not. People go into hospital to get well, not to pick up other diseases. The Government must implement the best practice and sound management that will allow local hospitals to successfully tackle MRSA."
