Seaford's MP, Norman Baker has today called for action from East Sussex County Council over the speed and volume of traffic on Blatchington Hill, Seaford, including the introduction of a lorry ban.
In recent months, Norman has been contacted by several residents of the area, who have been highly concerned about both the speed and volume of traffic on the road, which runs through an important officially designated Conservation Area. The County Council says it sympathises, but has not taken any action to help.
Now Norman has written to the Director of Transport and Environment at the County Council, Rupert Clubb, telling him that doing nothing is not acceptable. In particular, Norman has asked for a origin and destination count of the traffic on the road, in order to see what diverting of traffic would be possible, as well as demanding a lorry ban. The County Council previously stated that it could only justify a ban if at least one HGV per hour (between 8am and 6pm) used the road. A study later showed that this figure was being easily exceeded.
Speaking on the issue, Norman said: "I am determined not to leave matters as they are, and so I have written to Rupert Clubb at the County Council in order to press for a resolution to this issue that will be to the satisfaction of my constituents in the area.
"The Blatchington Hill area of Seaford is supposed to be a Conservation Area, and it is very important that as such the character of the area is not spoilt by high volumes of traffic, and by HGVs in particular. Indeed, the residential nature of the area also means that a review of the traffic rules in the area is even more of a priority.
"I hope that the County Council will view this situation as an opportunity to take positive action."
The local County Councilor for the area, Jon Freeman added: "Given the extensive residential building continuing in the immediate area, it is no wonder that there continues to be rat running and large volumes of traffic on the road.
"Children on their way to school and disabled people should be able to have safe access to their local area, not be scared off the streets due to heavy traffic."
