Norman welcomes recommendations to end surcharges for prepayment meters

Lewes MP Norman Baker has welcomed Ofgem's Report into the energy market and recommendations that energy companies should scrap surcharges for those who pay via direct debits or pre-payment meters.

Commenting on the news, Norman said: "In the current economic climate people are really feeling the squeeze. Rises in the cost of energy mean many people are finding it increasingly hard to make ends meet. Why, therefore, should often the most vulnerable be liable for these inequitable charges? This concern has been reiterated to me by a number of constituents and I have raised the matter direct with Ofgem. I am pleased their Report goes some way to address this flaw in the system.

"In tandem with the Report, the government now needs to put together a comprehensive plan to improve energy efficiency in our homes, something they have failed to do. Increased energy efficiency would reduce energy bills and, in turn, provide additional relief for people who are struggling to cope with high energy bills and the increased cost of living. It is also a very effective way of tackling climate change."
