21st Oct: Norman Baker congratulates Lib Dem Lewes District Council on its record on fly tipping over the last year

Local MP Norman Baker has today congratulated Lib Dem Lewes District Council on its record on fly tipping over the last year. The council has achieved a 100% record in successful prosecutions and an increase in the number undertaken, while cutting both the amount of fly tipping and the costs of enforcement.

Figures published by DEFRA, the Government environment department, show that the yearly cost of clearing up after fly tipping in the Lewes District Council area (£33,406 in the year 2007-8) equates to just over two months of the average cost of cleaning up across other councils nationally (£176,160). And even better, in the past year Lewes District Council has achieved a 41.5% reduction in costs on a 17.9% drop in recorded incidents compared to a national drop of only 16.2% in costs on a much smaller 7.5% drop in incidents.

Lewes District Council was also able to make 6 prosecutions for fly tipping in the year 2006-7, all of which were successful.

Congratulating the council, Norman said: "Fly tipping is a scourge that not only spoils the environment for all of us, but also one that can result in personal injury or cause a serious public health hazard.

"I am glad to see that Lewes District Council is through its increasingly efficient actions taking a particularly strong stance on the issue, and hope that the message is going out to fly tippers that they will be vigorously pursued, caught and successfully prosecuted in our area if they transgress."
