31st Oct: Local MP calls for the adoption of Ham Lane, Lewes

Local MP, Norman Baker, has today called for East Sussex County Council to adopt Ham Lane, in Lewes.

Ham Lane is the only access road to the Lewes Recycling Site and has been in very poor condition for a number of years with numerous potholes and overgrown vegetation. East Sussex County Council has, in the past, undertaken repairs as a goodwill gesture but, as road ownership has failed to be established, a permanent solution has not been found.

Commenting on the case, Norman said: "I have been contacted by a significant number of constituents about this issue over the past couple of years and believe that it is time a permanent solution is achieved. In particular, I am concerned that the condition of this road is getting to the point that it may be becoming a hindrance to those who want to visit the Recycling Site. We should be actively encouraging recycling and putting obstacles in people's way, like this pothole-ridden Lane, is not the right way to go about it.

He added: "While the goodwill repairs that the council has undertaken were most certainly welcomed, we need to achieve a permanent solution and having looked in detail at the various options I believe that the only realistic solution is for the local highway authority, East Sussex County Council, to adopt the Lane. I have therefore written to Rupert Clubb, the Director of Transport and Environment at East Sussex County Council, to request that strong consideration is given to adopting Ham Lane."
