Police presence in Polegate will shortly be strengthened by the provision of a dedicated police constable and an extra sergeant to cover the town. And a promise has been made to reactivate the idea of a front office for the police in the town to improve communications with local people.
The good news came in a meeting yesterday (Thursday) in Lewes between Polegate's MP Norman Baker and Chief Inspector Neil Honnor, who covers the Wealden area for the police.
PC Liz Keenan, who presently covers both Hailsham and Polegate, will shortly be allocated only to Polegate, joining the existing three PCSOs dedicated to the town.
In terms of the front office issue, Norman Baker has asked the police to revisit the idea of having a "shop" or front office in the centre of Polegate to improve communications with the public. At present, there is no dedicated police station or unit anywhere in the town (except the traffic police building, not open to the public and hidden down a side street). Ch Insp Honnor has now agreed to see if progress can be made and has promised to report back to the MP.
At the meeting, the two also discussed parking in the town and agreed that the present parking restriction arrangements make enforcement difficult. The MP will be writing to East Sussex County Council to ask them to review matters.
Norman said: "These are really positive developments for Polegate. The town is happily already a very low crime area but there continue to be problems with some anti-social behaviour and with parking issues. I am confident that the new arrangements Sussex Police are putting in place in Polegate will drive crime down even further."
