11th Nov: Norman Baker MP visits Plumpton College

Norman Baker visit to Plumpton College

Local MP Norman Baker visited Plumpton College yesterday as part of the first ever Colleges Week, which is taking place from 10-16 November to celebrate the role colleges play in unlocking talent in communities and transforming the lives of learners.

Colleges Week will focus on five themes. The themes will demonstrate the impact colleges have on developing skills, delivering excellence, building strong communities, helping businesses to succeed and transforming lives.

Almost three million learners study in further education each year and three quarters of a million young people aged 16-18 study A-levels or vocational qualifications in a sixth form, tertiary or further education college. Success rates are rising year on year and over 90 per cent of full time students go on to university or straight into work following their college programme.

Colleges Week is being co-ordinated and organised by the Association of Colleges, the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC). For further information on Colleges Week visit www.collegesweek.org.

Plumpton College offers inspiring Land-Based courses, from school programmes through to Degree level. Taster courses are available to mainly school students aged 15/16 years. Innovative and successful courses are available at the main College site near Lewes, as well as centres at Netherfield, Flimwell and Robertsbridge in East Sussex.

The new Diploma in Environmental and Land Based Studies is on offer from September 2009, combining classroom learning with practical, hands-on experience.

Norman said: "I was very glad to be able to take the opportunity to visit Plumpton College at the start of Colleges Week. The College is going from strength to strength, and it is good to see that it is adding new courses to its prospectus.
