16th Dec: MP welcomes progress on Seaford health facilities

The news that new health facilities could be under construction in Seaford within 18 months has been warmly welcomed by the town's MP, Norman Baker.

The announcement follows a meeting between the Lib Dem MP and the PCT's new Chief Executive, Mike Wood, at which the MP put a passionate and robust case for a firm timetabled commitment to action from the PCT. That has today been issued.

Norman Baker says: "Seaford has not been well served by the NHS in terms of local facilities, when compared to other towns, and it has been a high political priority for me to campaign to rectify that.

"As far as I am concerned, a basic minimum is that there must be a minor injuries facility provided in the town, and people should be able to access the kind of out-patient services available at, say, the Lewes Victoria Hospital, without having to trail to either Eastbourne or Brighton. Seaford is a town of around 25,000 people, many of them elderly, and deserves a better deal from the NHS.

"I have been pressing the PCT hard for some time to make progress, and I am delighted that at last, after all the warm, there is finally a commitment in writing to produce a proper business case for submission to the Strategic Health Authority. Already good progress has been made in identifying and securing the land for a new facility.

"I will continue to work closely with the PCT to progress the scheme and help identify possible funding streams."
