Lewes MP Norman Baker has today released figures which show that passengers using Southeastern train services are receiving worse value for money than those in other parts of the country.
After being contacted by a local resident of Tunbridge Wells, Mr Baker has released figures which show that those who use Southeastern services pay more per mile travelled and per the average speed of the service.
A commuter buying a season ticket from Tunbridge Wells to London must pay roughly the same as a person buying a season ticket from Reading to London. This is despite the fact that it takes roughly TWICE as long to arrive in London from Tunbridge Wells than from Reading - even though the two places are roughly the same distance from London.
Overall, passengers using Southeastern services pay more per mile travelled than those making comparable journeys with other operators, and pay roughly twice as much, relative to the average speed of the train, than those travelling from Leighton Buzzard and Reading.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker said: "It is simply ridiculous that Southeastern passengers are being ripped off in this manner.
"Passengers in this part of the country are being asked to pay heavily for a service but they aren't seeing the benefit of their investment.
"It is unfair that prices are being hiked up when services vary so widely. We need greater consistency so that all passengers can receive the value for money they are entitled to expect."
