Lewes MP Norman Baker took on the government today over its plans to build a third runway at Heathrow Airport.
The proposals, which were unveiled by Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon in the House of Commons today, saw the government approve plans for a Heathrow expansion which will see an extra 125,000 aircraft movements at the airport every year.
The government has pushed through its proposals despite vocal opposition from the Liberal Democrats, who have now pledged to bring forward a ten minute rule Bill which will force the government to face a vote over its controversial plans.
Commenting, Norman Baker said:
"This decision shows just how little the government care about climate change and the environment. An expanded Heathrow will bring increased levels of pollution for years to come and will set the country back in its attempts to lower carbon emissions.
"Instead of pushing ahead with these unpopular proposals in this pig-headed manner, the government could have chosen to invest in environmentally friendly high-speed rail networks across the country.
"Instead, they have treated our rail networks as a mere afterthought. This is incredibly disappointing considering that high-speed rail would benefit millions of people all around the country.
"I will continue to work to stop this disastrous expansion from being forced upon Britain. The government must accept that their proposals need to stand up to a vote in parliament and I will endeavour to ensure that it does so."
