Local MP Norman Baker to challenge Gordon Brown's answering practices in debate tonight

Lewes MP Norman Baker will introduce a debate on the floor of the Commons tonight in which he will challenge the Prime Minister's disgraceful failure to answer written Parliamentary Questions properly.

Research conducted by Lib Dem Norman Baker shows that the Prime Minister is frequently providing answers to written questions which are unhelpful and which fail to answer the question.

Ahead of the debate, Norman Baker is releasing a summary of his findings, which shows that Gordon Brown's record of answering questions is particularly poor, with fewer than one in five questions asked of the Prime Minister receiving a helpful answer.

Commenting, Norman Baker said:

"These findings are a shocking indictment of the lack of openness and transparency with which the heart of government goes about its business.

"Opposition MPs are meant to scrutinise the government's work, but it's difficult to see how we are meant to do so when the Prime Minister is determined to operate in a culture of secrecy.

"I hope that this debate will help to highlight just how bad Gordon Brown's answering practices are, and hopefully encourage the government to release information in future."
