27th Jan: Local MP to take on government over Heathrow decision

The Commons will tomorrow debate a Motion calling on the government to ditch its disastrous plans to expand Heathrow airport.

The Motion is co-sponsored by two Lib Dems (leader Nick Clegg and Lewes MP Norman Baker) and four Conservatives, including leader David Cameron.

It calls on the government to rethink its plans for a third runway

Norman Baker said:

"It is imperative that the government scraps this ridiculous plan. A third runway at Heathrow will have a disastrous climate change impact and will make it much harder to reach emissions targets in the future.

"The government must stand up to the constant lobbying of the aviation industry, and should commit serious investment in environmentally friendly technologies such as high-speed rail instead.

"If this government is to have any environmental credibility whatsoever, it must recognise that this plan is fundamentally flawed and must not be given the green light to go ahead."
