21st Apr: MP to meet minister over Newhaven incinerator

Lewes MP Norman Baker today secured a pledge from Community Secretary Hazel Blears to meet to discuss the action being taken by the European Commission following their decision to uphold the complaint against East Sussex County Council submitted by the Lib Dem MP.

Norman Baker told the Commons:

"The European Commission indicated it is minded to uphold a complaint I have made against East Sussex County Council for breaking procurement rules regarding their hugely unpopular incinerator in Newhaven, and while my objections are naturally against the Tory Council rather than the government, I anticipate the formal notification will come to the Department for Communities and Local Government.

"Will the Secretary of State agree that I can have a short meeting, either with her or the relevant Minister in her department, before she replies formally to the European Commission?"

The Communities and Local Government Secretary, Hazel Blears, agreed to Norman Baker's request, and Mr Baker will now meet a government minister to discuss the issue.

Norman Baker added:

"I am pleased that the Secretary of State has agreed to meet me over the proposed incinerator. It is important that the government is properly briefed before it responds formally to the European Commission.

"I will continue the fight against the Conservatives' proposed incinerator, which would have an extremely detrimental impact on the local environment and Newhaven as a whole."
