The Highways Agency has confirmed that it intends to undertake significant works on the notorious bend south of Beddingham near the former landfill site. The bend currently slopes and bends severely, making it precarious for motorists. The Highways Agency has now agreed to undertake significant work to both straighten and flatten the bend, so making it safer in the future. The work is scheduled to take place by 2011/2012.
The news comes after local MP, Norman Baker, recently met with the Highways Agency at his constituency office and follows a number of letters, the most recent of which was sent on the 10th of July, written to the Highway Agency by the MP raising his concerns about safety on the road.
Commenting on the announcement Norman Baker said: "I have long been concerned by the unsatisfactory nature of the A26 at this specific point on the road. The gradient means that the bend creeps up on you and visibility is not great. I do therefore welcome the announcement by the Highways Agency to undertake significant work to address this and improve visibility by both flattening and straightening the alignment where serious injuries have occurred in the past."
This work is also part of other safety measures for the A26 which the Highways Agency has confirmed to the MP they intend to undertake. These will include the installation of red surfacing at key points, renewal of white lining, double white lines on bends, chevron signs and bollards, as well as vegetation trimming to improve forward visibility. These additional measures will begin to be implemented in September this year.
Norman added: "I am glad that the Highways Agency has now recognised the need to improve safety on the A26, something I have long argued for. The A26 has been witness to a number of accidents over the last few years, some of which have been tragically fatal and these steps will undoubtedly improve safety."
