6th Jan: Lewes MP calls for safety review of A27 junctions

Lewes MP, Norman Baker, has today written to Martin Wright, the South East Route Performance Manager at the Highways Agency, calling for a full safety risk assessment of farming traffic entering the A27 from the junctions at Glynde, Firle, and Ripe Lane.

Norman has taken this action after meeting with local farmers to discuss their concerns about various issues. During that meeting local farmers raised concerns about these junctions and stated that since the removal of the Beddingham level crossing, the former temporary lulls in traffic caused by the level crossing, which they used as a time to safely enter the A27, no longer occur. The subsequent constant flow of traffic makes it risky to exit the junctions in slow moving farming vehicles. In addition, they stated that the refuge at the centre of the junction at Glynde which allows cars to cross the road a lane at a time cannot accommodate tractors with trailers.

Commenting Norman said: "Farming is an important industry within this area and farming traffic is, of course, always going to be a prevalent by-product of that. It is therefore important that consideration for large farming vehicles is given in circumstances such as these, not just for the safety of the farmers, but of course also for other road users.

"It is for this reason that I have written to the Highways Agency to request that a full risk assessment of the use of farming vehicles takes place, including the safety of farmers and other road users, and to ask that steps be taken to address the concerns that have been raised."
