9th Jan: Newhaven MP welcomes windfarm announcement

Newhaven's MP Norman Baker has warmly welcomed the formal announcement today from Energy Minister Philip Hunt that a major investment in offshore wind in the Channel close to Newhaven has received the go-ahead, and that the contract for delivering this has now been let to E.On Climate and Renewables UK.

Norman says: "This very sensible investment in offshore wind opens up the strong possibility of significant investment in Newhaven port, which is both the closest port to the zoned area, and the only port for miles in either direction with significant space to accommodate this new activity.

"I believe Newhaven port should be used at least for the assembly of the wind turbines, if not for their construction. We could be talking about in excess of 100 jobs and a vital income stream to underpin the economics of the port and help safeguard the ferry service.

"I have already spoken this morning to E.On about the potential that Newhaven offers and they agreed to meet me to discuss this. I have invited them to meet me locally, ideally at the port itself.

"This is a major opportunity for Newhaven."
