2010 press releases

19th Jan: Local MP wins post office promise: "we will do better next time".

Lewes MP Norman Baker has welcomed assurances by the Post Office that they will change their future policy when temporary closures take place, as was the case when the Lewes Branch closed on the 2nd of January, leaving many customers without any information, bar a closure notice, or, of course, due to the closures, anywhere else to go. After Norman's intervention, the Post Office has stated that in future they will provide a customer contact number, and the locations of alternative branches.

The Lewes Branch temporary closure took place on the morning of the 2nd of January and was as a result of a timer fault with the safe, preventing staff from accessing the till inserts and, therefore, their ability to serve customers. However, the problem was that no information about the reasons for the closure were published, nor a contact number for concerned customers to call.

Commenting Norman said: "Of course, such a closure would not have been such a problem had it not been for the pillaging of the local Post Office network. However, the fact of the matter is that there was no alternative for customers in such an event, leaving some very concerned, and I do not believe it to be acceptable that these customers were not kept informed of the situation."

Norman subsequently contacted the Post Office to request that an explanation for the temporary closure be provided and ask why information, such as a customer contact number, was not provided. The Post Office's response accepted that the level of information provided was not satisfactory and will ensure that in future the service it provides to its customers in such instances will improve.

Norman added: "While this information should have been there in the first place, I am pleased that the Post Office has recognised that there was a problem and has provided assurances that it will be rectified in the future."
