Seaford MP Norman Baker has urged the Lead Member for Transport and Environment at the County Council to accept a part-time 20mph speed limit for Sutton Road and Steyne Road in Seaford, an area which has a large amount of child pedestrians.
A report has been compiled by officers at the council recommending that the development of a part-time speed limit for Sutton Avenue and Steyne Road is progressed in the 2010/2011 financial year, with a view on implementing the scheme in 2011/2012. The Lead Member will be able to approve this at the Lead Cabinet Member Committee on the 22nd of February.
Norman last year called for East Sussex County Council to bring in variable part-time 20mph speed limits outside of schools as a result of a Parliamentary Question that he asked, in which the Transport Minister Paul Clark confirmed that local authorities have the power to do so.
Commenting Norman said: "There has been strong local support for the reduction of the speed limit on these roads due to the number of schools around this area and I certainly support the local residents and parents. Of course, the central concern is for the safety of the schoolchildren and college students and a part-time speed limit which comes into effect when the pupils arrive and leave school is a sensible way to address such a concern. I am therefore urging the Lead Member to accept the report and ensure that matters progress."
Local County Councillor Carolyn Lambert has also voiced her support for the progression of the scheme.
Commenting Carolyn said: "I am pleased that the proposals have got to this point, but this now lies with the Lead Member and I urge him to make the right choice and support the concerns of local residents and parents."
