23rd Feb: Local MP pledges to fight for survival of the cheque

Local MP Norman Baker has today announced that he is to meet with senior representatives of the Payments Council in order to lobby them to scrap their unpopular proposals to phase out the use of cheques as a form of payment by 2018.

The Payments Council is the body that sets the strategy for dealing with payments within the United Kingdom, and caused considerable controversy when it announced in December that it will aim to phase out cheques by 2018, so long as viable alternatives can be found.

Speaking on the issue, Norman said: "I am concerned that the Payments Council have taken the decision to phase out the cheque by 2018 despite it being a highly popular and effective form of payment.

"Many people, particularly the elderly prefer to use cheques as they feel that they cannot trust electronic form of payment, whereas others such as trades people find payment by cheque to be much less hassle and cost than electronic forms of payment.

"I have been contacted by a number of my constituents about this issue, and I hope that the Payments Council will be willing to take their concerns on board when I meet with them in early March."
