1st Mar: Norman Baker MP calls on Network Rail to clean up their land

Lewes MP Norman Baker has today called on Network Rail to undertake a clean-up operation on their land to the east of Lewes railway station, on the banks of the tracks which lead towards Seaford and Polegate.

On a number of recent train trips, and also whilst crossing the footbridge that leads to Sussex Downs College, the MP has espied a large accumulation of rubbish, which is particularly noticeable close to the signal box and under the footbridge.

As this rubbish is on railway land, Network Rail is the only body that can tidy up the mess. Norman has therefore written to the Public Affairs Officer at Network Rail, Ed Wilson, and asked him to look into his complaint, with a view to initiating a clean-up of the area.

Commenting Norman said: "The train trip out of, and into Lewes is, generally, a visually pleasurable one and it is a great pity that the first 100 yards or so of any trip towards Polegate or Seaford is a complete eyesore due to the amount of rubbish on the edges of the tracks. I also do not want such an eyesore to be the first view visitors have when their train is pulling into Lewes station. While the litter is, of course, not the fault of Network Rail, they are the ones who must tidy it up and I have therefore written to them to request that a clean-up operation takes place and I hope that they will undertake this action swiftly."
