24th Mar: Lewes MP slams Tories' disastrous nuclear plans

Local MP Norman Baker has today slammed the Conservative Party's pledge to build a new nuclear power plant every 18 months, and instead called for investment in renewable energy, such as wind farms off the coast of Newhaven, in the Lewes constituency.

The Conservative Party have released proposals to allow energy companies to open at least one new nuclear facility every year and a half, and have said there would be "no limit" on the growth of nuclear power in Britain under a Conservative government.

The proposals also call for a national energy plan to be submitted to Parliament. This would restrict the possibility of legal objections by environmental campaigners.

The Lib Dems oppose the production of a new generation of nuclear power plants, and have called for greater investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency schemes to benefit the environment.

Norman Baker commented:

Blindly pledging to build a new nuclear plant every 18 months is a recipe for disaster. Resorting to reliance on nuclear power is a backward step. Instead, we should be looking to increase energy efficiency and develop the use of sustainable local energy generation such as solar PV panels.

"Nuclear energy is not clean energy. A new generation of nuclear power stations would leave us with a legacy of deadly radioactive waste that will take hundreds of years and billions of pounds to clean up.

"This irresponsible policy shows that the Conservatives don't care about, and can't be trusted with, our environment. We should be investing in renewable sources such as wave and tidal energy, and of course the wind farms off the coast of Newhaven which I have helped to secure."
