Lewes MP Norman Baker has arranged to formally present a petition to Simon Cullen, the Manager of Lewes Station at 9am on Thursday 8 April, calling on Southern to rule out any suggestion that it may close the independently run Runaway Café at the station and possibly replace it with a national chain.
After news of the suggestion broke there was an outcry across Lewes, and a petition in support of the existing café owners was begun. This has now received more than 1,000 signatures.
Speaking on the issue, Norman said: "In Lewes we not only have a proud tradition of having independent local shops. We also have a tradition of the community pulling round together to try to save them when they are threatened. The Runaway Café is no exception to this."
Norman will be present to be interviewed on the subject and have his photo taken on site with Simon Cullen.
