Southern Railway has this morning notified Lewes MP Norman Baker that they have decided to renew the lease for the Runaway Café in Lewes, enabling the present owners to carry on in situ.
The news came minutes before Norman Baker was due to present to one of Southern's top managers a petition of well over 1000 signatures, demanding that the present occupiers, Vic and Jackie, be allowed to continue. Earlier, the MP had raised the matter personally in a face to face meeting with Southern's MD Chris Burchell, and has been in touch with the company on the issue on virtually a daily basis.
Norman says: "This is a fantastic result for people power, a just result for Vic and Jackie, who have done so much to create a great café, and good news for Southern too. The company has promised to make Lewes a showcase station, and the service provided by the café’s tenants fits exactly with that objective.
"Southern has wisely listened to its customers and avoided the pitfall Greene King fell into when it tried to impose an unwanted view on the people of Lewes by withdrawing the local brew, Harveys, from the Lewes Arms."
