17th May: Lewes MP takes up post as transport minister

Norman Baker, newly re-elected Lib Dem MP for the Lewes constituency, began his ministerial career today at the Department for Transport, having been appointed a Minister by David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

The MP, one of a band of the first Liberal Ministers in government since 1945, will lead on regional and local transport issues, including roads, buses, taxis and light rail. He will also lead for the government on cycling, walking, and alternatives to travel, such as video conferencing.

Norman says: "I am delighted to have been offered this post, particularly as it allows me to follow the environmental agenda which has always been important to me.

"I have had a productive first day, meeting my ministerial colleagues and the civil service that will be supporting me, as well as getting down to some of the key issues facing the transport sector."

The Lewes MP was first informed of the news of his appointment by the Deputy Prime Minister on Thursday evening, followed by a phone call from the Prime Minister.

Norman adds: "While I am delighted to be doing this job, I want to assure my constituents that they will always come first and local issues continue to have my top priority."
