9th Jun: Local MP secures Newhaven cycle route review assurances

A comprehensive study will be taking place to look at cycling provisions along the A26, including the seeking of better signed and safer routes, following assurances given to local MP Norman Baker from the Highways Agency.

The news came after Norman wrote to Martin Wright, Area Route Manager, about the need for improved cycling facilities along the route between Newhaven and Beddingham. Mr. Wright, in his response, provided assurances that a study programmed for this year will look at cycling provisions along the A26 and will enable the HA to combine with the local authorities to seek well signed and safer routes, and provide affordable improvements.

The study will now also look for a suitable link between Newhaven and Firle as the current one is neither child friendly or good in poor weather.

Commenting Norman said: "I welcome the Highways Agency's response to my enquiry. I am an advocate of cycling not only for the environmental benefits that it has over cars, but also for the health benefits that it has for individuals and I believe that improvements to this stretch should certainly progress. While I accept that times are tight financially, I believe that an affordable plan of signage and safety improvements will encourage cyclists to use this route and I urge the Highways Agency, in conjunction with the local authority to progress such provisions swiftly, and not with such unnecessary delays that we saw with the Ringmer-Lewes cycle route.
