29th Jun: Lewes MP welcomes income tax cuts for thousands across Sussex

Local MP Norman Baker has today welcomed the Government's announcement that thousands of East Sussex workers will be taken out of income tax entirely, with many more paying £200 less each year. As part of the Budget, the government has announced that the personal allowance - income from which no tax is paid - is to rise from £6,475 to £7,475.

Nationwide, it is estimated that the change in policy will take almost one million workers, who earn less than £7,475, out of the income tax system entirely, including thousands in East Sussex . In addition, basic rate taxpayers - those who earn less than £37,400 annually - will pay £200 less each year.

The announcement, one of several key Lib Dem manifesto pledges which has been adopted by the Coalition government, has been welcomed by Lewes MP Norman Baker.

Lib Dem MP Norman commented:

"I am delighted that the coalition government has been able to increase personal allowances, as the Lib Dems have long campaigned for. Ultimately, I hope that we will be able to achieve the goal, which the Lib Dems have set, of increasing the personal allowance to £10,000.

"This policy will benefit thousands throughout the area. Not only will it remove thousands of East Sussex workers from the income tax system entirely, but a large number of basic rate taxpayers will be £200 better off every year. This announcement will not only help to protect the most vulnerable in society, but will also ensure that thousands of families will have more money in their pockets.

"It has been difficult to find the right balance between the cuts in spending everyone knows we must make, and progressive tax reforms which will make the system fairer, but I believe that by adopting progressive Lib Dem policies such as this, the government has managed to do so. There may be tough times ahead, but this announcement shows that the government is committed to fairness and to helping the lowest paid in these difficult economic circumstances."
