1st Jul: Lewes MP Norman Baker takes first questions as Transport Minister

Lewes MP Norman Baker recently appeared on the floor of the House of Commons to answer oral questions in his capacity as a Transport Minister for the first time.

Lib Dem Mr Baker, recently appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport in the new coalition government, appeared at the Despatch Box to answer questions on a variety of subjects including the future of the national concessionary bus fares scheme, subsidised bus services, and the Manchester metrolink.

Norman confirmed that the government will continue to allow local authorities to negotiate with bus companies directly rather than administering the concessionary fares scheme centrally, and told the Commons that the government will actively seek to encourage bus travel and get better value for passengers.

Norman Baker later commented:

"Oral questions are a valuable way of holding the government to account and finding out what issues concern MPs at both a national and a local level.

"My first session covered numerous important issues such as the future of the concessionary fares scheme, which affects people across the country, and several local transport schemes in different areas.

"Having spent many years as an opposition MP, I am delighted to have been able to take part in oral questions as a Government Minister, and I am already looking forward to my next oral questions session later this month!"
