Lewes MP Norman Baker has today welcomed the news that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit has fallen in recent months. Official figures released by the government this week revealed that in June 2010, there were 1,201 people claiming unemployment benefit across the constituency compared with 1,349 in June 2009 - a decrease of 11%.
The most dramatic drop in unemployment has been among young people. In June 2010, there were 345 claimants aged 24 or under - a decrease of 16.9% compared with the previous year.
Norman Baker commented:
"I am very pleased that there has been a fall in unemployment in the Lewes constituency. It is particularly pleasing to see fewer young people being forced to claim unemployment benefit.
"However, it is important that we do not become complacent and that we continue to strive to get more people into work.
"The coalition government is committed to helping those who are struggling to get back to work, and I will do all I can as the local MP to assist the jobless in our area in getting the support they need during these difficult times, as well as supporting local businesses to secure more investment and jobs for our area."
