East Sussex County Council must take steps to respond to the concerns raised about pedestrians using Claremont Road Railway Bridge. That is the view of the Seaford MP, Norman Baker, who has today called on the council to review this issue.
Following recent structural improvement works to the railway bridge, it has come as some surprise to local residents that as pedestrians they are no longer able to use the bridge safely. This has come as a result of the re-establishment of two-way traffic on the bridge, which ceased for some time after the bridge's structural integrity was questioned, and now does not allow space for a designated, safe footpath.
Many local residents have raised concerns about pedestrians navigating the bridge with little space between the pedestrian and moving vehicles and some believe it is inevitable that this will result in an accident, not least when light reduces in the winter months.
Commenting Norman said: "For some time, pedestrian use has been established on this bridge and it is somewhat unsurprising that local residents are concerned about access being removed, as it is a convenient point of access to south of the railway line. I believe that the council must respond to these concerns before an accident takes place and I have therefore written to Rupert Clubb, the Director of Transport and Environment, to ask that that happens."
