31st Aug: Local MP calls on East Sussex County Council to Reduce Street Clutter

Local MP and Transport Minister, Norman Baker has today called on ESCC to get rid of unnecessary signs and 'street clutter' in a bid to make streets tidier and less confusing for motorists and pedestrians.

The MP's call is in conjunction with his ministerial colleague, the Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond MP, who has written to all local authorities to outline his concerns that the character of the country's urban spaces is being damaged by unnecessary and confusing signage.

Although some signs are required by law, government advice is that for signs to be most effective, they should be kept to a minimum. To help councils do this, the Department for Transport is reviewing traffic signs policy and new advice on how to reduce clutter will be published later this year. Road signage comes within Norman Baker's portfolio.

Commenting Norman said: "It goes without saying that a large proportion of signs are necessary on our roads to ensure motorists' and pedestrians' safety, but unnecessary signage is a waste of taxpayers' money and is unsightly. It is therefore quite right that the County Council review signage and street clutter to ensure that it is necessary, and I have written to the council to say just that."

The MP is also asking local residents to get involved by highlighting any unnecessary signage to him by writing to his constituency office at 23 East Street, Lewes, BN7 2LJ.

Norman added: "I am hopeful that local residents will get involved and let me know when they have seen street clutter or unnecessary signs by writing to my office. Photos would be particularly welcome".
