15th Sep: Local MP hands Freedom Bill ideas to Deputy PM

Local residents this week had their suggestions for the Freedom (Great Repeal) Bill presented to the Deputy PM, Nick Clegg, by local MP Norman Baker.

Following a call for evidence from Norman, a number of people have contacted his office with their ideas for the Bill, which aims to restore Britain's tradition of freedom and fairness by repealing excessive legislation, and cutting unnecessary bureaucracy and red tape.

Commenting Norman said: "The steady erosion of civil liberties in this country has been allowed to go on for far too long now, and this Bill is an excellent opportunity to restore some of the freedoms which have been lost over the past thirteen years. Its emphasis on public involvement is also something I certainly welcome".

One resident suggested eliminating some of the red tape around vehicle permits, which has lead to a number of volunteer drivers being fined. While another pointed out that the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act (2006) has made run-of-the-mill traffic movements illegal in many instances, and should therefore be scrapped.

Another suggestion was that those who have been convicted in the past for crimes which are no longer regarded as crimes should have their criminal records wiped clean.

Norman added: "There has been a good response from local constituents with regards to the Bill, which shows that local people have a genuine interest in being actively involved in our democracy."

The Bill is due to be published in November.
