In light of the huge tailbacks already witnessed, the Highways Agency must do all they can to finish the works on the A27 ahead of schedule. That is the view of the local MP, Norman Baker, who yesterday, in a phone call from his office, urged the Highways Agency to do just that.
The tailbacks have been a result of work on the A27 to create an emergency gate to ease traffic flow during road works and following incidents. In addition, there is to be work on the Southerham railway bridge and in total the works are due to last eleven weeks.
Due to the nature of the work, including open excavation, the Highways Agency has confirmed that it is not possible to open the lanes when the work temporarily ceases, for instance overnight, and while acknowledging the initial tailbacks the HA believes that these will reduce in the coming days and weeks as more drivers became aware of the work.
Commenting Norman said: "I appreciate that the nature of the work means the lanes have to remain closed, but is seems to me that the eleven week schedule does seem a little excessive and having potentially eleven weeks of tailbacks like those witnessed earlier in the week is a real concern. I have therefore called on the Highways Agency to take all steps within their means to speed this work along and get all hands to the deck to try to finish ahead of schedule and I am sure they will endeavour to do just that. In the meantime, I would certainly urge travellers to use railway connections where possible."
